My family has been on this land approaching 150 years. I have always wondered what it must have been like for my great grandfather coming to a place he had never seen before to start a new life in Iowa with so many unknown challenges. Yet he did it.
Over the years many things changed. We quite farming with horses when my Dad was young. Grandpa told me horses were more reliable than those early tractors. Several of our barns were built in the 1950's and are still providing shelter for the goats during the winter months when its -30. I am still using our 1960's farm equipment. Not only is it paid for but provides so many memories of growing up and time spent with family learning a lifetime of knowledge.
What my dad instilled in me from a young age was the ability to think outside the box.. and in fact was his only request when I went to college. Sometimes I probably carried that a bit too far! My life took a rather crooked road and after years of traveling and learning I am back living where I started. Putting together the pieces of a miraculous journey with a whole bunch of history smiling over my shoulder.
